Eintracht Frankfurt Strives for Goals: Omar Marmoush’s Return to Wolfsburg

He knows his way around Wolfsburg. Omar Marmoush was under contract with VfL Wolfsburg for six years. Now he returns to the “Wolves” – and has a dream. The Egyptian wants to add another goal to his only Bundesliga goal so far for his new employer Eintracht Frankfurt. Goals overall are helpful in achieving what Eintracht coach Dino Toppmöller has planned for the demanding away game this Saturday (3:30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky) against their immediate neighbors in the table: “We want to win the game .”

To do this, Eintracht has to score goals. It is the supreme discipline in football. Toppmöller’s team has a lot of catching up to do. Four measly goals in five league games are a weak result that can be greatly improved. “We sometimes enjoy our possession of the ball,” said sports director Markus Krösche recently. But possession of the ball doesn’t score goals – Eintracht has long since recognized this.

Most recently, in the zero number against Sportclub Freiburg, she dominated the game and combined nicely towards the opponent’s penalty area. But then the Frankfurt professionals ran out of solutions. No serious long-range shot, no dangerous standard situation, no serious action “in the box” that Toppmöller keeps talking about – meaning the zone in the penalty area.

No progress in the table

“If you look at the goal difference between us and Wolfsburg, we are minimalist. This shows that both teams show good discipline. They are extremely hard-working,” said Toppmöller before leaving for Wolfsburg.

His players are said to have been diligent during training behind closed doors, where they completed goal-scoring exercises. No doubt: “The offensive is a bit of a focus,” said Toppmöller and asked himself “whether that is extremely helpful.” The 42-year-old football teacher’s wish: “We should give our young players some of their time.”

With a lot of draws – most recently four in a row, at the start of the season there was a narrow 1-0 against newly promoted Darmstadt – Eintracht has not made any significant progress in the table. She made her way to Lower Saxony in eighth place to join seventh-placed Wolfsburg. But it is also true: Toppmöller’s team has so far managed to remain unbeaten in nine competitive games.

This means that son Dino has already overtaken his father Klaus, who, as Eintracht coach at the time, did not lose eight games in a row in 1993. Next milestone: Armin Veh’s record. In 2011, he even managed to remain undefeated 13 times in a row in the second division.

Omar Marmoush is familiar with the internal relationship between Eintracht and VfL. Niko Kovac anyway. The former cup winner likes to think back to his time in Frankfurt. Before meeting his old club again, the “Wolves” coach said: “Sure, the two cup finals and the cup win were important. But the deciding factor was relegation. There was a cohesion, a corrosion between the fans, the club, the region and the city. You can still see that today.”

Marmoush has been captivated by this boom. The Egyptian, who came from Wolfsburg this summer, has committed to Eintracht until mid-2027. Since Randal Kolo Muani turned his back on Eintracht at literally the last minute and sports director Krösche hastily loaned Rafael Borré to league rivals Werder Bremen, the hopeful supplementary player has become a regular player.

Marmoush, 24 years old, runs and struggles, pushes into spaces and strives to create opportunities. He and his colleagues have not always succeeded in doing this in the past few weeks. But Marmoush is trying. He is characterized by zeal and commitment. The attacker does not give up the ball. Most recently, he worked together with substitute Jessic Ngankam, mostly from the second half onwards. Ngankam, a lively offensive player, also runs a lot and intensively. Both have one thing in common: They have to be much more dangerous to score and do what really counts: shoot the ball into the goal.
