The Quietest Place in the World: Discover the Anechoic Chamber at Microsoft’s Headquarters and its Impact on Technology

A place with a deafening silence was artificially created. People who go there are said to be able to hear their heartbeats and even their lungs. Although it initially seems like a perfect place to escape the infernal noise of big cities, no one lasted more than an hour. What is the use of such rooms. There is also one in Romania.

The quietest place in the world has been artificially created. The idea started from the need for a space that completely absorbs the reflections of sound or electromagnetic waves. The place is so quiet that people can hear their heartbeats or even their lungs in some cases. Although it seems like a perfect place, no one has lasted more than 55 minutes there.

The most peaceful place in the world was created out of the need for an oasis of relaxation, to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. People who need a few quiet moments often choose to recharge their batteries in nature. The sound of the wind and the chirping of birds is perfect for them to disconnect from all their problems.

Even though nature seems like a perfect place to recharge the batteries, some people feel the need for total silence. From this idea started the plan of those from Microsoft, who built, in 2015, the quietest place in the world. This is at its headquarters in Redmond, United States of America, and is called the anechoic chamber.

Such rooms exist all over the world, including in Romania. In our country, it was built at the Technical University of Bucharest, according to atlas-geografic.net.

How Microsoft created the world’s quietest place

The room was constructed of six layers of concrete and steel. They work as a barrier to sounds coming from outside. The ceiling, floor and walls were clad in fiberglass materials. This helps to cancel echoes and ensures effective assimilation of noises in the anechoic chamber.

The walls of this place located above springs that dampen vibrations have an atypical geometry. The floor was constructed of steel. Thus, the noise level in this room is 20 decibels below the threshold that the human ear can detect.

Although it seems to be a perfect place to disconnect from the daily hustle and bustle, the deafening silence is not easy to bear. Researchers have revealed that the longest time a human has spent in this room is 55 minutes. The absolute lack of any outside sound and the perception of noises produced by your own body can lead to the feeling of isolation and claustrophobia. They can affect the mental state.

The quietest place in the world helps develop technologies. Such a room is ideal for measuring the performance of some audio products. Sounds in their purest form can also be recorded here.
