Archangel Michael’s Day Celebrations and Political Tensions on La Palma

Today is the great day of Archangel Michael. This has a certain meaning here on the island. After all, the boy is not only the patron saint of Tazacorte but actually of the entire island. At least that’s what the name “San Miguel de La Palma” says. In reality, the island is more likely to have the Virgin de las Nieves as its patron saint. Double and/or multiple protection always works better and sometimes tradition does the rest. You can also see this in El Paso. The Virgin de la Bonanza is actually the village saint, and the fact that Bonanza means something like prosperity certainly played a role in the finding of the saint back then. Actually, we’re more likely to celebrate the Virgin del Pino here, and since it’s always associated with a huge party, it’s somehow more popular. The Archangel Michael is the big man in Tazacorte and is carved in stone on the plaza in the middle of the fountain. Since such an archangel is a church story, there was a big service today. There is a tradition that the island boss appears in church and asks the angel to do his part for the well-being of the island. The clergy then sit there in their festive robes and listen to the church politician. Sergio Rodriguez said he was proud to be able to do this after three months in office and recalled the importance of the Archangel for the island and the tradition that has existed for 500 years. He focused on Tazacorte and also reviewed a little of the history of the place. Among other things, he mentioned the town’s accidental independence from Spain in 1911, which was only very brief and rather unintentional. He also emphasized the character of the Bagañetes, which was characterized by a particular stubbornness and their own rebelliousness. It is precisely this quality, he emphasized with great excitement, that is currently important for the island. And so he encouraged not only Tazacorte but the entire valley and the entire island in the currently difficult reconstruction situation. However, it was important to him to ask the archangel to be helpful. Above all, and Sergio was a party politician again, he asked that the archangel ensure that the government in Madrid contributed the necessary liquid funds. The help could actually be necessary. Today the formation of the right-wing government in Madrid has failed. And the Coalición Canarias has bet on this horse and sold one vote at a really high price, meaning Madrid is pushing money to the Canary Islands and not asking what the CC is doing with it. But that doesn’t work and the PSOE’s efforts were quickly rejected. But if Pedro Sánchez is now cobbling together a majority, then that will be without the CC, and it has already offended a number of other regional parties in advance. A parliamentary majority for projects or financial injections in the Canary Islands is not exactly any more likely. Because of this clear positioning, including towards the right-wing extremists of VOX, there is already a bit of simmering within the party. In the past, people have always tried to side with the small regional parties in order to get as much out of it as possible for their own region. Although we will definitely get together again very quickly, if it serves our own or even a shared agenda. Depending on the level, the alliances are different anyway. And so it’s fitting that today the PP is making fun of the fact that the CC managed to forget the suffering of the volcano victims in just 3 months. Representative Carlos Cabrera pointed out that the new government had not taken out any loans to give to those affected by the volcano. The opposition has always demanded that the island government take out 90 million euros in loans for this. Although the current government has taken out loans, this was done to finance festivals and sporting events. Mr. Cabrera doesn’t particularly want to criticize the fact that this wasn’t done, but he would think it would be desirable if his election promises were kept. So if Sergio doesn’t get any money from the bank and at the same time the connection to the Madrid parliament isn’t the best, then it would be smart for Sergio to ask the Archangel for support in the negotiations.
