Global Stock Market Update: Mixed Prices as US Government Shutdown Looms

Global stock prices were mixed on Friday after signs of slowing inflation on both sides of the Atlantic and ahead of an expected US government shutdown.

The first US government shutdown since 2019 is expected this weekend if the US Congress fails to agree on a budget proposal before the end of September.

“I think the idea of ​​a potential government shutdown is not a major factor in determining the direction of stock prices, but it certainly doesn’t help [investoru] sentiment,” said Interactive Brokers analyst Steve Sosnick.

Concerns that rising oil prices will keep inflation high dampened investor sentiment in September, sending stock indexes down to multi-month lows.

European stock indices rose on Friday after the publication of data that the inflation rate in the Eurozone slowed down to 4.3% in September, which is the lowest level since October 2021.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.5% to 33,507.50 on Friday, the Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 0.3% to 4,288.05, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.1% to 13,219.32 points.

London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.1% to 7,608.08 on Friday, Frankfurt’s DAX rose 0.4% to 15,386.58 and Paris’ CAC 40 added 0.3% to 7,135. 06 points.

WTI crude fell 1.0% to $90.79 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday. The price of “Brent” crude oil on the London exchange decreased by 0.1% to 95.31 dollars per barrel.

On the Dutch exchange “Title Transfer Facility” (TTF), the price of natural gas fell by 2.9% to 41.86 euros per megawatt hour on Friday.

The euro rose against the US dollar on Friday from $1.0570 to $1.0576 per euro, the British pound rose from $1.2203 to $1.2205 per pound and the US dollar against the Japanese yen rose from 149.28 to 149.40 yen to the dollar. The euro rose against the British pound from 86.59 to 86.64 pence per euro.
