Currently only a quarter of all local councilors in Baden-Württemberg are women. The equal opportunities officers for the districts of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, Emmendingen and Ortenau would like to change that.
BZ: Have you already been active in local politics yourself – or have you thought about becoming one?
Baum: I used to live in Freiburg, where a local council mandate is very time-consuming and therefore out of the question for me. I now live in the country and am actually thinking about running for the local council.
BZ: Why is it necessary to attract women to politics?
Klemm: Because the topics are diverse, such a committee should also be diverse. For example, when setting tax rates, daycare opening times and development plans, it is important to hear not just one side, but the voices of young and old or even of all genders.
