Whenever a new generation of iPhones is launched, countless tests are carried out to attest to the quality of the new devices. Two of the most recent, for example, analyzed the ability to recharge two iPhones 15. Has the USB-C port brought improvements in this sense?
Starting with testing the DXOMARK, which evaluated a variety of Apple and third-party cables when recharging devices. The first major conclusion was the confirmation that there are no limitations for loading using sources other than those from Apple — at least not among those tested.
Tests indicated that the charger is capable of transmitting 90% of the energy extracted from the socket to the smartphone. Translating this into numbers, when using a high-power charger, it is possible to recharge the iPhone 15 at 20W and the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 25W, numbers that are not remotely surprising.
These data coincide with those from tests of the ChargerLAB with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. With both Apple and third-party chargers, the device’s recharging power was around 25/26W — numbers similar to those of the previous generation, even with the new feature surrounding the connector.
ChargerLAB also did time testing. The iPhone 15 Pro Max was able to complete a full charge in 1 hour and 55 minutes with Apple’s dual 35W USB-C charger. Surprisingly, the device recharged 80% in 51 minutes — less than half the total charge time.
With the 70W charger, the charging curve was similar and there was not much improvement compared to the less powerful source, as the device completed the charge in 1 hour and 48 minutes. This “slowness” is explained by the fact that the USB-C input on iPhones does not have an E-Marker chip, essential for charging above 60W.
Finally, a temperature test was also carried out during charging in an environment of 25ºC. The highest temperature recorded was around 38ºC, around 30 minutes after the device was plugged in. Interestingly, after 1 hour of charging, the temperature dropped to just under 30ºC.
Remembering that we also did several tests with the USB-C port on the new iPhones!
