The tiger mosquito has been spotted in Oudenbosch. The mosquito often comes with holidaymakers or with trucks coming from Southern Europe. Before leaving abroad, check whether your car, caravan and suitcase are mosquito-free, warns the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority. And you can also prevent the mosquito from spreading once it is there.
The mosquito lays eggs in stagnant water, according to the NVWA. Think of flower pots and bowls that are outside, but also rain barrels.
With these tips you can make it difficult for the tiger mosquito.
Look in your garden for possible breeding grounds. Is there water on a tarpaulin, in a flower pot or wheelbarrow? Clean up as much as possible and put it under a roof. Isn’t that possible? After every rain shower, empty the objects that can collect water. Clean your gutter thoroughly. If it becomes clogged by leaves, water can also remain stagnant in it. Do you have a rain barrel? Then cover it well so that mosquitoes cannot lay eggs. Stretch a fine-mesh net or place a lid on the barrel. Do you have pets? If they do not drink everything, regularly change the drinking water in the feeding troughs. Change the water in watering cans weekly. Do you have a swimming pool without chlorine? It is also better to change the water weekly or let the bath drain in the winter and make sure that no water can remain. Scrub places where there has been stagnant water well with a broom.
Despite all these measures, do you still see a tiger mosquito? Catch it and report it at the NVWA. It tries to prevent the mosquito from gaining a foothold here.
Dangerous mosquito
Tiger mosquitoes, recognizable by their small size and black and white stripe pattern, can spread infectious diseases when bitten. The mosquitoes mainly bite during the day. They are known for spreading dengue fever, but mosquitoes can also spread other diseases such as the Zika virus and chikungunya.
