September Inflation Slows, But Not as Much as Expected: State Data

MILANO – L‘inflation slows down in September but at a slower pace than expected. This is what the data highlights State released this morning. In the current month the national consumer price index recorded an increase of 0.2% on a monthly basis and 5.3% on an annual basis, from +5.4% in the previous month and against 5.1% expected.

The new decline, explains the Institute, is affected by the trend in food prices, whose annual growth “is significantly reduced while remaining at marked values” (+8.6%). On the other hand, the prices of unregulated energy goods (fuel, electricity and gas on the free market) and transport services are accelerating.

The annual growth in “shopping cart” prices also slows down, standing at +8.3% in September. The prices of food, home and personal care goods are slowing down in trend terms (from +9.4% to +8.3%) and those of high-frequency purchasing products (from +6.9% to +6.6%).

The data in the Eurozone exceeded expectations

Overall, however, the Eurozone data shows a greater decline than expected. In September the inflation rate in the Eurozone fell to 4.3% against 5.2% in August, above analysts’ expectations.
