Explosions occurred in two Pakistani mosques, killing at least 57 people and injuring dozens, Reuters reports. Mosques celebrated Mawlid, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad.
The first explosion occurred at a mosque in Balochistan province, bordering Afghanistan. As a result of the explosion, 52 people were killed and about 50 more people were injured. Al Jazeera, citing the local police chief writesthat the bomb was detonated by a suicide bomber. Another police official said a suicide bomber blew himself up next to a police car that was parked not far from the mosque.
The second explosion occurred at a mosque in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, also bordering Afghanistan. According to Al Jazeera, five people died there. In addition, as a result of the explosion, the roof of the mosque collapsed, trapping people under the rubble. After search and rescue efforts were completed, emergency services reported that at least ten people were injured. In turn, the deputy chief of the local police said that the target of the attackers (there were two of them) was a police station located a few meters from the mosque.
No terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the bombings.
