On September 26th, Foreign Minister Dominique Hasler attended the traditional Liechtenstein reception at the residence in Strasbourg. This year’s reception was the focus of the upcoming chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. In her role as Education Minister, Government Councilor Hasler also took part in the Council of Europe Education Conference on September 28th and 29th.
Less than 2 months until Liechtenstein chairs the Committee of Ministers
Foreign Minister Dominique Hasler used the traditional reception in Strasbourg to exchange ideas with the leaders of the Council of Europe and with ambassadors from other member states. In addition to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejcinovic Buric, the President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Síofra O’Leary, the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly, Despina Chatzivassiliou-Tsovilis, and the Liechtenstein judge at the ECtHR, Carlo Ranzoni, numerous ambassadors followed and ambassadors as well as directors of the Council of Europe and personalities from political Strasbourg accepted Liechtenstein’s invitation. The focus of this year’s Liechtenstein reception was the upcoming chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
On November 15th this year, Liechtenstein will take over the rotating chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for six months. Liechtenstein last held the presidency in 2001. The presidency offers Liechtenstein the opportunity to assume responsibility and make a visible contribution to the protection and promotion of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
Education plays a crucial role in promoting democracy, human rights and the rule of law
Together with 42 other education ministers from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe, Education Minister Hasler and school district director Rachel Guerra also took part in the education conference in Strasbourg. In addition to the adoption of a European Education Strategy 2030 entitled “Learners First: Education for Today’s and Tomorrow’s Democratic Societies”, the meeting also focused on five resolutions. These reaffirmed the crucial role of education in promoting democracy and human rights as well as the rule of law and discussed measures to address global challenges. The states agreed that education is of great importance, especially in times of need and crisis, and that a united approach is essential. The conference topics were of particular interest to Liechtenstein as they also represent current priorities and challenges in the implementation of the Education Strategy 2025plus.
