A state of panic has spread among the residents of the city of Derna, eastern Libya, during the past few days, after videos and pictures spread of what were said to be “ghouls” appearing in the destroyed areas of the city.
Derna was exposed to sweeping floods resulting from Storm Daniel on September 10, which led to the death and loss of thousands and the obliteration of entire neighborhoods of the city.
Over the past few days, pages and accounts on various social media platforms have circulated pictures and video clips of what were said to be “strange shadows appearing under weak lights in dark areas at night,” or “fires caused by ghouls.”
Stories of “ghouls”, which is the plural of “ghouls”, have spread like wildfire. There are those who talk about “demons” that take the form of frightening or luminous shapes, fire or predatory animals, and appear to the population, linking their appearance to “the large number of deaths” as a result of the recent disaster.
In another circulating video clip, a man and a paramedic appear to shout “Allahu Akbar” in front of the Al-Sahaba Mosque in Derna, to confront this alleged phenomenon.
Searches for “Derna ghouls” on social media platforms have become prominent, in an attempt to verify their appearance in the stricken city, after allegations of their actual appearance.

But the truth of the matter began to become clear as the work of removing the rubble continued in Derna, where the men of the army’s 166th Brigade noticed the presence of “white clothes dolls” hanging suspiciously amid the rubble.
The army men’s investigations into these clothes resulted in finding two people behind these dolls, according to Aqila Al-Saber, the official in the media office of the 166th Brigade.
During their interrogation, the two defendants confessed to making dolls and lighting fires in front of them among the rubble of houses, and making noises and portraying them as “ghouls” with the aim of spreading rumors among the residents, according to Al-Saber.
