Commander of US Army’s Central Command, General Michael Corella’s Visits to Lebanon: Insights on US Military Aid and Hezbollah Influence

“Al-Anbaa Al-Kuwait” indicated that this is not the first time that the Commander of the US Army’s Central Command, General Michael Corella, has visited Lebanon. Rather, his visits are periodic, and he often comes every six months, and if there is an emergency, he attends immediately.

According to an official Lebanese source, every time General Corella and those who preceded him visit Lebanon, they visit one of the military units that benefit from the annual US military aid program allocated to the Lebanese Army. In his last visit, the visit was to the Henry Chehab Barracks in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.

The source says: General Kurilla’s visit to the barracks where he commands the Fourth Intervention Regiment, which benefits from the American military aid program, is a normal matter and does not constitute an exception. It is evidence that the army is spread across the Lebanese territory and has no red lines in front of it with regard to performing its assigned tasks. Especially since the aforementioned regiment carries out exceptional tasks, from combating organized crime gangs to confronting terrorism, especially preventing the transformation of the Palestinian camps in the southern suburbs (Al-Burj, Sabra and Shatila) into a haven for terrorists and drug and kidnapping gangs, and the army deployed in this region is performing major tasks and achieving important results.

The source considered that giving explanations for the visit outside the military framework and providing assistance is part of the speculation and analysis that the Lebanese arena is full of, and to say that the barracks is adjacent to the Iranian embassy and to build on that in developing scenarios and concocting messages is absolutely ridiculous, because Iran and the United States of America communicate directly and indirectly. The latest outcome of the negotiations was the exchange of prisoners and the release of deposits. However, the Lebanese imagination is so vast that it expresses the reality of the emptiness experienced by the Lebanese political arena.

The source added that Hezbollah leaked news of the American commander’s visit to the army barracks in the southern suburb, adjacent to the Iranian embassy building, to confuse the nomination of the army commander, General Joseph Aoun, for the presidency.
