Swedish Prime Minister Kristersson wants to call in the army’s help to put an end to gang violence in the country. Earlier this week, three people were killed in the space of a few hours: two in the capital Stockholm and one in a village north of the city. A woman was killed in that village in an explosion at her house. She lived next door to a gang member and would have had nothing to do with the gang.
In a TV speech, Kristersson said the gangs must be tracked down and “defeated”. He also promised “strong and groundbreaking measures” to end gang violence.
According to Swedish broadcaster SVT, eleven people have been killed in gang violence this month, the highest number since December 2019. Four people have no link to the gangs, according to the broadcaster. “Sweden has never seen anything like this. No other country in Europe is experiencing this,” Kristersson said.

What exactly the assistance from the Swedish army should look like is still a subject of discussion. Swedish Armed Forces Commander Micael Bydén tells the newspaper Dagens Nyheter that the army is ready to help the police.
The army may take over security from the police in some areas. This would allow officers to better focus on combating gang violence.
Bloody conflicts
Sweden has seen bloody conflicts between gangs over weapons, drugs and money in recent years. Last year, Kristersson’s center-right government came to power promising to crack down on crime, but so far this has not led to results.
According to the left-wing opposition, Kristersson has only made Sweden less safe, while the prime minister says that the left has pursued “irresponsible migration policies” and has allowed the integration of migrants to fail.
