Germany will be able to purchase the Israeli Arrow-3 missile defense system. On September 28, 2023, a declaration of intent was signed in Berlin.
What is known
The decision to purchase the Arrow-3 is Germany’s reaction to Russia’s war against Ukraine. The deal will strengthen relations between Berlin and Tel Aviv. The agreement is estimated at approximately $4.3 billion. This is the largest one-time defense contract in Israeli history. The funds will be allocated from the Bundeswehr’s $100 billion weapons fund, which was created last year.
The German Ministry of Defense states that achieving full combat readiness is planned for 2030. In this case, initial operational readiness will be achieved within approximately two years.
The Israeli missile defense system has been in development since the mid-1980s. The first test launch took place in the summer of 1990. The United States was involved in the development, so the deal required White House approval.
Arrow-3 can shoot down medium-range ballistic missiles (3000-5500 km). The maximum interception altitude is 100 km. The missile defense system includes the Super Green Pine radar, which is capable of detecting air threats within a radius of 900 km.
