There are daily habits that can cause cancer without you realizing it. After finding out, you should be more careful.
Cancer is a deadly disease and difficult to treat. Cancer is still the second leading cause of death after heart disease in developing and developed countries.
According to statistics Globocan (Global Cancer Observatory) which collects cancer data worldwide, 19.3 million people were diagnosed with cancer in 2020. Meanwhile 10 million patients died from cancer.
It is estimated that these figures will increase by 50% by 2040. According to data released by World Health Organization (WHO), cancer was only diagnosed at a late stage in 40% of countries due to delays in arriving at health facilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The most important factors that trigger cancer during this pandemic are a sedentary lifestyle, tobacco use, alcohol consumption and unhealthy eating habits. Smoking not only causes 85% of lung cancers, but also causes many life-threatening cancers, such as head and neck, pancreatic and bladder cancers. “It is estimated that poor eating habits, excessive alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise increase the risk of cancer by 30% to 50%,” said Medis Yeşim Eralp, MD, professor of oncology at Acıbadem Maslak Hospital, as reported by Acibadem International.
In addition, other possible causes include difficulty accessing treatment, ignorance of examinations, or early discontinuation of treatment due to fear of infection. Not to mention lifestyle factors during and after the pandemic which increase the risk of developing cancer.
Daily habits that cause cancer
1. Smoking
Did you know that smoking can cause mouth and lung cancer? Tobacco triggers cancer by damaging the immune shield and affecting not only the cells along the path of the smoke, but also the entire body because of the hundreds of dangerous substances it contains besides nicotine.
Smoking and using tobacco products risks developing 14 types of cancer including life-threatening cancers, such as head and neck, lung, bladder and pancreatic cancer. This causes 25% to 30% of cancer-related deaths.
Compared with mothers who don’t smoke, the risk of lung cancer is 23 times higher in male smokers and 17 times higher in female smokers.
2. Unhealthy eating patterns
Excessive consumption of saturated fatty acids and red meat in what is known as a ‘Western-style diet’ can risk cancer. Not to mention, when combined with a sedentary lifestyle, it increases the risk of colon cancer by 45%.
As a result of this type of diet and lifestyle, obesity increases the risk of uterine, breast, pancreatic and stomach cancer by 30%.
3. Consuming alcohol
Excessive drinking increases rates of colon, breast, liver and head and neck cancers. Previous studies have shown that alcohol consumption of 14 g or more per day (360 ml of beer, 150 ml of wine, 45 ml of whiskey) increases the risk of breast cancer by 23%, colon cancer by 17%, and esophageal cancer by 220%.
4. Often eat grilled meat and vegetables
Research states that charred food contains pyrolysate and various amino acids that are harmful to the body. If you often eat burnt food, you are at risk of developing stomach and intestinal cancer.
“This compound in particular increases the risk of stomach and intestinal cancer,” said Dr. Medical.
5. Sunbathing for too long without sunscreen
Sunbathing for long periods without sunscreen paves the way for melanoma and other skin cancers. This causes uncontrolled cell division, located in the lower layer of the skin (dermis) and suppresses the body’s immunity because harmful ultraviolet rays damage DNA.
In addition, 6 or more severe sunburns before age 25 increase the risk of melanoma by 2.7-fold and other skin cancers by 1.7 to 2-fold. Dr. Medical states that tanning in a solarium device can increase the risk of skin cancer up to 6 times.
“It is important to avoid solariums, stay at home between 10:00 and 16:00, when the sun is strongest. “The sun’s rays are the most damaging and use sunscreen with 30 SPF or more as a sun protection factor,” advises Dr. Medical.
6. Sleep with your cellphone on the bed
The connection between cellphones which can be a source of electromagnetic radiation and cancer has been a public fear for a long time.
It has been suggested that radiofrequency radiation can trigger cancer by accelerating glucose metabolism in surrounding tissues or causing blood vessel dilation and thermal changes.
“It is recommended to avoid sleeping with a cell phone next to the bed, use earphones when talking on a cell phone, and avoid prolonged contact with a cell phone to prevent cancer,” explained Dr. Medical.
7. Often stay up late
Do you often stay up late looking for me time at night? This bad habit can cause cancer. Sleeping in front of the television and staying up late also increases the risk of cancer.
Melatonin is a hormone whose job is to regulate the body’s sleep cycle and biological clock, called the circadian rhythm. Due to poor sleeping habits, the epiphysis, a small organ located in the middle of the brain, does not secrete melatonin properly, thus triggering the development of cancer.
How to prevent cancer
Current research provides strong support for the argument that most cancers are caused by environmental factors and can be prevented with lifestyle modifications. “Cancer is preventable,” Dr. Graham Colditz and Dr. Siobhan Sutcliffe of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louiscollect CNBC International.
The following are daily habits that can prevent cancer.
1. Quality sleep
“Getting a good night’s sleep, an active lifestyle and taking time to exercise regularly (three times a week) are very important to avoid stress. “Research shows that too much stress alone does not trigger cancer,” said Dr. Medical.
2. Exercise
Exercising for 30 to 60 minutes a day does not reduce the risk of cancer. If you regularly do physical activity throughout the day, you can reduce your risk of getting cancer.
“Take breaks to stretch, walk, maybe lift light weights, anything so you’re not just sitting for long periods of time. “Physical activity seems to help balance healthy and unhealthy hormones, and creates a healthier environment in the body,” explains Alice G. Bender, Associate Director for Nutrition Programs, American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) reported from Next Avenue.
3. Maintain a healthy diet
Mothers need to maintain a healthy diet and reduce fast or processed food. Eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of cancer.
Mothers are advised to consume lots of plant foods to prevent cancer, such as the Mediterranean diet. Apart from preventing cancer, a healthy diet will also make you lose weight and remain ideal.
Let’s avoid habits that cause cancer from now on, Mother.
