A 21-year-old irregular migrant was injured yesterday evening following a mine explosion in the military buffer zone of Mount Salloum in Kasserin, not far from the Algerian border. The local radio Mosaique fm made this known, quoting the regional health director of Kasserine, Abdelghani Chaâbani, who declared that the young man has lost the use of a leg and has undergone surgery. The reasons for the migrant’s presence in the military zone were not revealed, according to the radio.
Over the past decade, terrorist groups used to take refuge on the heights of Mount Salloum and over time they strewn the ground with anti-personnel mines. Now those same places have become paths of passage for clandestine migrants, mostly sub-Saharan, who transit illegally from Algeria to Tunisia. There are periodic police operations by the Tunisian security forces that intercept these flows.
