Henri Lenferink temporarily becomes the king’s commissioner in Gelderland. The PvdA member replaces John Berends, who has resigned from his position pending an investigation into possible misconduct. That investigation will take about six months.

Berends is accused of inappropriate behavior in the workplace. Nine of Berends’ thirteen closest employees told the newspaper The Gelderlander that they have had to deal with inappropriate comments. Some indicate that physical boundaries have also been crossed.

In response to those complaints, an independent investigation is now being conducted into Berends’ behavior. Lenferink will take over the tasks during the investigation, writes Omroep Gelderland.

Longest serving mayor

A month ago, Lenferink (66) resigned as mayor of Leiden. After wearing the chain of office for twenty years, he was the longest-serving mayor in the Netherlands.
