Jakarta –
Total revenue from Candy Crush Saga, a game released in 2012 which is still popular today, has reached USD 20 billion or around IDR 310.7 trillion.
This game from developer King will soon have its levels updated to reach 15,000. This game was first available on the site, then brought to Facebook, and now on mobile devices.
Candy Crush Saga is a game that pioneered the freemium business model. That is, the game is available for free, but in order to level up faster, players can pay or watch advertisements in the game.
President King Tjodolf Sommestad said games like Candy Crush Saga and Farm Heroes Saga show that mobile games can have a long life, as quoted by detikINET from Reuters, Wednesday (27/9/2023).
“We proved to ourselves and to the industry that it’s possible to revive a game that’s been around for years, keep it relevant for a decade or more, and even break records after being around for more than a decade,” said Sommestad, in an interview .
Candy Crush general manager Todd Green said this game is constantly being updated to keep it satisfying. From simply optimizing the small bounce when a “candy” is dropped to adding new levels, including the 15,000 level milestone.
Sommestad also claims Candy Crush is the game with the highest grossing income in the United States app store for the last six years.
“We keep trying to make new games, but the bar is already very high and it takes a lot of effort to launch a new game nowadays. Candy Crush only took a few months to make but we added 10 years of development after that,” he added.
Currently, King is owned by Activision Blizzard, which acquired them in 2016. In Q2, King contributed net income to Activision of USD 747 million, or 31% of Activision’s total income.
