North Korea Expels African-American US Soldier: Travis King’s Defection and Release

North Korea has decided to expel Travis King, the African-American US soldier who on July 18 had defected by voluntarily crossing the military demarcation line into the North during a tour of the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas. King is now in U.S. custody.

“The United States made no concessions to North Korea in exchange for the soldier’s release,” a senior American official said in a briefing with a small group of journalists. “The soldier is doing well both physically and emotionally,” the official added. “He is very happy to return home and see his family again,” he specified.

Travis King “confessed to having illegally intruded” into North Korean territory, due to his “discomfort” towards the US military and American society. This was written by the North Korean agency KCNA, cited by the South Korean agency Yonhap. “Travis King confessed to illegally intruding into the territory of the DPRK because he harbored a grudge against inhumane mistreatment and racial discrimination within the US military and was disillusioned with unequal US society,” the KCNA said in its report in English language. “The competent body has decided to expel Travis King, a US Army soldier who illegally intruded into the territory of the DPRK (acronym for Democratic People’s Republic of North Korea, ed.), according to the law of the Republic,” he wrote the agency, Yonhap reports again.
