A 25-year-old man from Groningen was sentenced to a prison sentence of sixteen years on Wednesday. He is suspected of opening fire on a group of bachelors last year, killing one of them.
The incident happened on July 9, 2022 in Haddingestraat in Groningen. The suspect allegedly had an argument with the group of bachelors. He claims to have been threatened by the group, who also kicked and hit him. The Groningen man says that he shot to defend himself, and that it was therefore self-defence.
The Public Prosecution Service (OM) points to the images of the incident, which do not match what the suspect claims. So it cannot be seen that he was kicked or hit. He also came up with different explanations about what exactly happened.
According to the Public Prosecution Service, an earlier argument in the café got out of hand, after which the suspect allegedly threatened and challenged the group on the street. Part of the group then allegedly went after him and threw a bottle in his direction. The Public Prosecution Service states that he then opened fire on the group and threw the firearm into a container.
The man is suspected of manslaughter of the victim, a 48-year-old man from Leeuwarden. He is also suspected of attempted manslaughter of seven others and of prohibited possession of weapons. The suspect himself reported the threat. According to the Public Prosecution Service, this is also being investigated.
The public prosecutor does not believe there is emergency defense. “There were so many solutions other than shooting and it was not a situation where the suspect had to defend himself against an attack.” The Public Prosecution Service does acknowledge that the behavior of the group of bachelors “also does not deserve the beauty prize”. But the suspect himself was looking for problems with his attacking and threatening attitude, and so the public prosecutor believes a long prison sentence is appropriate.
