Custody battle
Joe and Sophie confirmed their separation in a joint statement on September 6. Although they claimed that they will part ‘in an amicable way’, the break quickly turned out to have a dark side. The British actress sued her ex for “wrongfully detaining their daughters in the United States”. This was to try to get their two children – Willa and Delphine – to England, her home country. For example, they have been planning to move to England for some time and she accuses Joe of refusing to return the children’s passports to her.
Sophie’s complaint goes against the “amical co-parenting” that the couple allegedly discussed during their meeting – about two weeks after filing the divorce petition – Joe’s representative said in a statement to ‘Page Six’. “Less than 24 hours later, Sophie said she wanted to take the children back to the UK permanently. She then demanded through this file that Joe hand over the children’s passports so that she could immediately take them out of the country,” Joe’s lawyer further stated. “When language like ‘kidnapping’ is used it is at best misleading and at worst a serious abuse of the justice system. The children were not kidnapped.”
In the meantime, according to the British newspaper ‘The Daily Mail’, the former couple have entered into a temporary agreement. The children will stay in New York City a little longer (whether for a while or not).
