Volkswagen Plant in Cvikau Limited Production during Autumn Holidays; Impact of German Government’s Decision on Electric Car Subsidies and Temporary Worker Contracts

“Due to the current market situation, vehicle production will be limited at the Volkswagen plant in Cvikau (Zwickau) during the autumn holidays in Saxony from October 2 to 13,” said a spokeswoman for the concern. Production of the ID.3 in Dresden will be suspended from October 2nd and resumed from October 16th. Volkswagen is negotiating with the unions about how production in Cvikov, near the Czech border, will continue in the second half of October, the Bloomberg agency wrote.

In recent months, interest in electric cars in Europe has been hampered by higher energy, housing and credit costs. Consumer concerns about charging infrastructure and car range also remain.

The German government’s decision to end subsidies for electric cars in company fleets this month led to a 171 percent year-on-year increase in new electric car registrations in August, according to the German automotive industry association VDA.

The automaker previously announced that it would not renew the contracts of 269 temporary workers whose one-year contracts are about to expire. Large corporate orders, which accounted for around 70 percent of the electric cars produced in Zwickau, have fallen sharply since the end of state subsidies for company fleets.
