Vancouver, 2023 – The tennis world experienced a Roger Federer like it is rarely seen at the Laver Cup 2023 in Vancouver. As a tennis pensioner, far away from the playing field, and yet as close to it as ever.
The calm after the storm
Federer, the tennis legend, admitted to Eurosport that he misses the adrenaline and attention he received as a professional.
“I miss the adrenaline. Secretly you like being the center of attention,” said the 42-year-old. But he adds that to him too “the big ovations, the happy faces of the people” miss.
Although he admits the tour has been good to him, he is happy with his decision to retire. “The tour was good to me. I loved it. But now I’m happy with retirement.”
A new chapter: Laver Cup 2023
During the 2023 Laver Cup, Federer had the opportunity to experience the tournament from a new perspective.
He remembers saying goodbye to the Laver Cup 2022, alongside his great rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Federer emphasized how happy he was “to be back in the tennis family”. Tennis legend Rod Laver was also at Federer’s side and the two chatted about the golden age of tennis. “We talked about the volleys and the doubles and what it was like in the ’60s and ’70s,” Federer said.
The Swiss is also looking forward to the next Laver Cup in Berlin. “I don’t know the German capital very well,” Federer admitted “But I can’t wait to go there. It’s great to bring tennis back to Germany.” Federer is hoping for some familiar faces for the next edition.
“I would like to see Novak (Djokovic) again, Alcaraz and Novak in the same team. Sascha Zverev would be great for the German market.” Finally, Federer sent a message to the European fans: “Medvedev would be great. (…) And maybe someone will make a breakthrough,” and thus gives hope for further success.
