The largest German container ship arrived in the port of Hamburg for the first time on Tuesday. The new “Berlin Express” from the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is scheduled to be christened next week.
The new flagship of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd is around 400 meters long and 61 meters wide. It is one of a series of twelve identical ships that the Hamburg shipping company is having built in South Korea.
“Berlin Express” does not come to Hamburg fully loaded
400 meters in length is currently the limit for the largest container ships in the world. However, some of them can carry a few hundred more boxes than the new “Berlin Express”. This brings it to almost 23,700 containers. In Hamburg, however, there are not allowed to be quite as many boxes on board because otherwise the freighter would not be able to make it up the Elbe.
Freighter arrived in the afternoon
The “Berlin Express” arrived with the afternoon flood – initially it was filmed near the Elbe beach in Neumühlen. We then went backwards into Waltershofer Hafen to Burchardkai.
Do dock workers protest at baptisms?
At the christening next Monday, the “Berlin Express” will be clearly visible directly on the Elbe. The godmother is Elke Büdenbender, the wife of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. It is likely that port workers will use the ceremony to protest against the planned partial sale of the port operator HHLA.
