Sony President Jim Ryan Reveals Plans for PlayStation Home and Exciting Metaverse Projects

The big FTC/Microsoft leak last week gave us a ton of information about Microsoft’s plans for the future. But there were also some excerpts from other companies involved, which were noticed It will resetthis includes a comment on PlayStation Home from Sony Interactive Entertainment president Jim Ryan.

PlayStation Home was a virtual world in the same spirit as Second Life, which was launched as a beta version in 2008. Today we would probably call this a metaverse instead, but it never gained a large audience and was finally closed in 2015. In a conversation with FTC about metaverse and PS VR2, Ryan said that PlayStation Home was ahead of its time, “probably” by 10-15 years, and added:

“We have a couple of projects going on that are very exciting for us in terms of creating a kind of game-type metaverse that could potentially work with other parts of Sony. Sony’s entertainment assets have tremendous potential in the metaverse space.”

Although the metaverse hype has died down over the past few years, and Meta/Facebook (who invested the most in the idea) have seemingly put most of their work behind them, it looks like we may still get some metaverse love from Sony if these plans are still viable. Whether that could ultimately mean a relaunch of something like PlayStation Home with VR remains to be seen.

Looking forward to a metaverse from Sony?

Thanks, PlaystationLifestyle.
