Tennis players of the world selection defended their victory in the Laver Cup. In Vancouver, they beat the European team 13:2 in the exhibition tournament. American Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe decided their victory in doubles on Sunday.
The world selection went for victory already on Friday, when after the first four matches he led 4:0. On Saturday, he increased the lead to 10:2, when Casper Ruud from Norway recorded Europe’s only win
On Sunday, when the win was awarded three points, Shelton and Tiafoe already decided the triumph in the opening doubles match. They beat the Polish-Russian pair Hubert Hurkacz and Andrej Rubljov twice 7:6, and the remaining matches were not played in a tie.
Tiafoe followed up on last year’s performance, when he helped the world team end the four-year reign of Europe with decisive points. “Last year was my first time on the team, so it was emotional. And now with Ben, it’s been really fun,” Tiafoe said.
“We gave them a good load,” added world selection captain John McEnroe. “But we’re already thinking about next year, because victories are much better than defeats. We struggled in the opening years, but now we’ve tasted victory and it’s great,” he added.
