Recycle Your Household Appliances: An Ecological and Solidarity Donation Service in Cannes-Pays-de-Lérins and Nice Côte d’Azur

This is a new service offered in the Cannes-Pays-de-Lérins area and the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis: a company comes to your home to recycle your household appliances. An ecological and solidarity donation.

This resident of Mougins in the Alpes-Maritimes completely emptied and unplugged her fridge. In the middle of work, he does not correspond to the project of his new kitchen. Concerned about the environment, Sandrine Jalliffier-Talmas does not want to throw away: “we are collectors and renovators of objects with my husband, I prefer that it be reconditioned, it is part of our way of life.” Its household appliances have had their day, but they remain of good quality and could benefit others.

It was by contacting the bulky waste department at her town hall that she discovered the existence of the site. jedonnemonelectromenager.fr. The inhabitants of theCannes-Pays-de-Lérins agglomeration can benefit from it since September 4, those in the Nice Côte d’Azur metropolis since September 18.

In total, 713,000 residents are affected. In a few clicks, she described her household appliances and chose a time slot.

“Today people are invited to go to the recycling center or drop it off at the bulky waste service, but it’s true that that requires a bit of logistics. There it can be a real service to be able to come to the home to recover the old object” explains Marie-Agnès Portero, general director of the environment within the Cannes-Pays-de-Lérins urban community.

The initiative comes from the non-profit general interest company called “eco-organization”, Ecosystem. In partnership with communities, it is responsible for recovering household appliances from private donors, reconditioning when possible or recycling.

The devices recomposed by them are then intended to be put back into circulation via players in the social and solidarity economy such as Emmaüs for example.

That day, Sandrine’s fridge went from her home to the Ecosystem warehouse, a few kilometers away. On site, it is examined to find out if it needs to be recycled or if it can be reconditioned.

The idea is to give a second life, that’s the whole point of this home collection […] This will make it possible to avoid unloading, reloading and damaging the devices to give maximum chance to this second life.

Didier Mouzin – Ecosystem site manager.

Four out of ten products can have a second life, estimates the manager. The others are guaranteed to be recycled correctly.

Since the European Union directive of 2012, in the event of a sale, distributors of household appliances must take back free of charge the electrical and electronic equipment that the consumer disposes of. Ecosystem ensures that its service adds an ecological advantage with this preserving collection and reduces the impact of devices placed on the sidewalk, “it is a collection which will allow, in addition to the diagnosis, to be able to ensure the possibility of entrusting to structures of the social and solidarity economy and of preparing batches for them according to the technical capacity of each“, continues Didier Mouzin.

In the Alpes-Maritimes, the company already works with Emmaüs Nice and Envie Var and intends to expand its population and associations.

Other urban communities would consider offering this service to their residents.
