New Strains of COVID-19 Emerging in Ulyanovsk Region: Vaccination Not Necessary for Most

Despite the official end of the COVID-19 pandemic, the infection continues to mutate and new strains are emerging. Thus, scientists have identified “eris” and “pyrola”, which are actively spreading throughout the world. An ulpravda.ru correspondent found out what the situation is in the Ulyanovsk region and why it is not necessary for most to be vaccinated against coronavirus.

In the Ulyanovsk region, the diseases “erius” and “pyrola” have not yet been identified. But in our region they are actively becoming infected with omicron. According to Valeria Rechnik, an infectious diseases specialist at the Ministry of Health of the Ulyanovsk Region, every day in the summer from two to four patients were admitted to the Central Clinical Hospital. Now it’s about three times more. And if on the first day of summer no coronavirus cases were identified in the region, then in the week from September 11 to 17 there were 64 new cases.

“The number of coronavirus cases is increasing in the Ulyanovsk region. But this is the work of omicron, not new strains. The holiday season has ended, students have gone to school, and contacts have resumed. And naturally this led to an increase in morbidity. In Moscow, a Covid hospital was recently reopened due to a sharp number of cases. We have not yet made such decisions. The infectious diseases department at the Central City Clinical Hospital accommodates 35 patients. And if the incidence is high, beds in the Central Clinical Hospital and other medical institutions will be repurposed,” said Valeria Nikolaevna.

Two in one

New strains of coronavirus “Erius” and “Pyrola” proceed like a common seasonal respiratory viral infection. They are easily transmitted from person to person, but there is no evidence that they are severely transmitted, Rechnik reports. Let us remind you that during Covid, as a rule, the temperature rises gradually and to low temperatures. With influenza, the intoxication syndrome is more pronounced, which is not observed with COVID-19.

“You need to be careful of both coronavirus and flu. After all, last year Ulyanovsk residents rarely became infected with both. Of course, this is a more severe course of the infection, since both viruses have the same targets in the body. Namely, they affect the bronchopulmonary system and negatively affect the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. But despite this, you can get vaccinated against the virus and influenza, unlike other infections. And besides, there are antiviral drugs against these pathogens,” explained Valeria Nikolaevna.

Vaccination is not for everyone

Recently, not everyone can be vaccinated against coronavirus, clarified the chief freelance specialist – epidemiologist of the Ulyanovsk region Fira Sayfutdinova. Once a year, only people over 60 years of age, people over 18 years of age who have not previously had Covid and have not been vaccinated, cancer patients and others at risk should be vaccinated once a year.

“The rest do not need to be vaccinated, since the incidence is low compared to pandemic times. And the infection is now easier. But everyone needs to be vaccinated against the flu, because it is more dangerous now,” noted Fira Amirovna.

Due to the fact that the majority of the population does not need to be vaccinated against coronavirus, there is practically no Sputnik V in the region. To sign up for vaccination, you need to call the regional Ministry of Health hotline (tel. 8 800 200 7307), warns Fira Amirovna. Specialists will sign you up for a specific day at one of the Ulyanovsk medical institutions.

“You need to gather five people in one place at once in order to use one bottle of vaccine for everyone. And since there are not many people willing to get vaccinated against Covid, it is necessary to first gather all the patients together. As of September 21, Sputnik V is available in Ulyanovsk at clinic No. 4 and city hospital No. 2. The vaccination can also be done internally,” recalls Sayfutdinova.

Stronger than Sputnik V

Very soon, a new powerful coronavirus vaccine, Convasel, developed by the St. Petersburg Institute of Vaccines and Serums, should appear in Ulyanovsk medical institutions, reported Fira Saifutdinova. She warned that vaccination will help protect against both new and old strains of Covid. “Convasel” is single-dose, which is good in the current realities. After all, you no longer have to wait at the vaccination office for four more people.

Sputnik V has already made its contribution to the fight against coronavirus. But the virus mutates, a different vaccine or an update is needed, as is the case with flu shots. We have already submitted an application for Konvasel, we are waiting for delivery,” said Fira Amirovna.

But this does not mean that Sputnik V is not at all effective, reassures Valeria Rechnik.

“Convasel” is effective against all strains of coronavirus because it is made not on the basis of the S-protein, which is very variable in viruses, but on the basis of the nucleocapsid protein, which is the same in all strains. As for Sputnik V, its effectiveness still remains today. Because even though the protein changes, certain parts of it remain the same. And this allows the body to form a certain defense,” explained Valeria Nikolaevna.
