Importance and Administration of Meningococcus B and MenACWY Vaccines: Expert Advice

The meningococcus B vaccine is administered at two, four and 12 months of age and Boticaria García explains that it is now free in all autonomous communities. However, she points out that there are 12 types of meningococcus, which is why the MenACWY vaccine is inoculated, which can protect against four types of meningitis, A, C, W and Y.

“It is a vaccine for one of the forms of meningitis,” says the expert, caused by a bacteria that inflames the membranes that cover the brain, meninges, and spinal cord. This indicates that it can be treated with antibiotics, but it can be very serious and sometimes they do not work, so vaccination is recommended.

It has already been included in all Spanish children’s calendars for adolescents aged 12 and, for minors between 13 and 18 years of age, the Spanish Pediatric Association recommends what is known as rescue vaccination, administering a single dose.

The reason for focusing on this age is that “the highest incidence of this disease occurs there due to social habits,” explains Boticaria, since they have a greater tendency to take study trips to other countries where it is more common, share crowded spaces, as well as objects, etc. “It’s a relatively new vaccine but it’s okay to get it,” she says.
