(APS) – The number of people living with cancer increased by 35% worldwide between 2005 and 2020, making this disease the second leading cause of deaths recorded globally, Diamniadio said on Monday ( west), the Senegalese cancer surgeon Ahmadou Dème.*
”Between 2005 and 2020, we noted in the world an exponential increase of 35% in the incidence of cancers, which constitute the second cause of death” on a global scale, underlined Mr. Dème during a international conference on non-communicable diseases, an initiative of the African Research Network.
This two-day conference is being held in Diamniadio, about thirty kilometers east of Dakar.
In Africa, said Professor Ahmadou Dème, ”each year, we have 1 million cases of cancer”. The progression of this disease ”is explained by population growth, old age and lifestyle,” he said.
”The most common cancers are those of the breast, prostate and lung,” the doctor reported, noting a ”high mortality” caused by lung and breast cancers.
Breast cancer is most common among women, according to the oncologist. He says that cervical cancer is the second most common cancer they suffer from.
”Prostate cancer is the most [fréquent] in humans,” noted Mr. Dème.
Speaking at a conference panel on ”the problems to be resolved for the management of cancers in Africa”, Professor Maguèye Guèye believes that ”the first decision to make is to make cancer a public health problem” ‘.
