Naming and Launching Ceremony of Japan’s Mogami-class Destroyer ‘Yodo’ at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works

On Tuesday, September 26, 2023, the naming and launching ceremony of the Mogami-class (planned for 2021) destroyer (03FFM), which is scheduled to be introduced to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, was held at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. . The ship was named Yodo and she was launched on the same day. Her ship number is “FFM-7”.

“Yodo” is the 7th destroyer built as a Mogami-class destroyer. The ship’s name comes from the Niyodo River, a first-class river that flows through Ehime and Kochi prefectures in Shikoku.

Yodo will undergo outfitting work and is scheduled to enter service with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in 2024. The eighth ship of the 03FFM, FFM-8, is being built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Maritime Systems in Tamano City, Okayama Prefecture, and is scheduled to be launched in November.
