Lower Bavaria is BMW country. According to the company, almost 20,000 people are employed in the group’s Dingolfing plant alone. And 7,500 of the automobile manufacturer’s employees live within a 20-kilometer radius of Straßkirchen. That’s more than twice as many as the community’s population. There is hardly a family in the entire region without a direct connection to BMW. That’s why the three-quarters majority in the referendum on the new BMW battery factory in Straßkirchen is not surprising. Especially since before the vote, practically all the important parties in Bavaria spoke out in favor of the settlement without any ifs or buts. Not even the Greens, who are otherwise resolutely opposed to the consumption of land, had anything to criticize.
