North Korea will allow foreign travelers for the first time since the corona pandemic started in 2020. Visitors must be quarantined for two days upon arrival.
According to the Chinese state broadcaster CCTV strict entry restrictions have been phased out since Monday.
Earlier this year, delegations of Chinese and Russian dignitaries visited the country for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Pyongyang also picked up North Koreans who were stranded abroad due to the closed borders.
The Asian country has not accepted foreign aid for corona vaccinations, making it highly vulnerable to major outbreaks of the virus.
North Korea is under international sanctions because the country is developing nuclear weapons and cruise missiles. This makes foreign tourists from neighboring China, for example, an important source of income. Due to the inflow of foreign currency, the country still has limited access to the international market.
Even before the entry restrictions due to corona, the country was already very closed and accessible to limited. All tourist trips must be made through North Korean travel agencies. In addition, tourists are closely monitored by supervisors who follow them throughout the entire trip.
