Sudanese Government Criticizes UN Participation of Coup Leader

The government of Abdullah Hamdok, dissolved by the decision of the Sudanese army commander, said that Al-Burhan’s participation in the work of the United Nations General Assembly in New York “contradicts the declared international positions against military coups.”

According to the memorandum signed by Abdullah Hamdok and a number of former ministers, the participation of the Sudanese army commander in the work of the United Nations General Assembly sends dangerous and encouraging signals to the military coups that have recently spread in Africa.

The memo stated in October 2021

Mr. Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres:

Subject: Participation of the leader of the October 25 coup in Sudan in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Constitutional Document for the Year We, the undersigned, members of the Sudanese government, which was formed in 2019, address you to clarify the following:

First, on October 25, 2021 AD, the military component, headed by Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan Abdel Rahman, led a military coup against the transitional civilian government, which led to a complete constitutional collapse. This resulted in the existence of a de facto government that also collapsed with the outbreak of the 15th War, which was a direct result of the coup against the civilian government. Secondly, regional and international institutions, including the African Union, the UN Security Council, and the European Union, have expressed their rejection of the military coup, which undermined the transitional government and halted the democratic transformation process in Sudan, by taking resolutions condemning the coup and demanding the return of power to civilians. Third, the coup leader’s invitation to attend the meetings of the United Nations General Assembly as a representative of Sudan contradicts the aforementioned stated positions, and it also contributes to prolonging the ongoing war in Sudan today. It sends very dangerous and encouraging signals to military coups, which have recently increased on the African continent. The glorious revolution of December 2018 decided the position of the Sudanese people on military coups and totalitarian regimes by approving the full civil legitimacy of the government and rejecting the October 25 coup, as well as defining the army’s relationship with politics by limiting its role to protecting the constitution and defending the country in the face of external dangers. To the coup leader, who is a party to the war that is raging in Sudan today, and who shares the certainty of democracy, peace and freedom.
