HC Elbflorenz Dresden Secures Thrilling Victory Against Essen

After 1:25 minutes, the HCE scored the first goal of the game through Lukas Wucherpfennig. The Essen team followed suit a little later to make it 1-1. Christian Wilhelm scored the goal. It was clear early on from both teams that they wanted to play uncompromising defense. The Saxons initially managed this a little better and the HC led 6:3 after a good 10 minutes. The guest from Essen had to take some difficult throws. Home keeper Marino Mallwitz had already made good saves by then. After the Dresden team failed to take advantage of a free counterattack opportunity to make it 8:4 and also received a time penalty for a head hit against Essen goalkeeper Lukas Diedrich, the guests from the Ruhrpott were able to reduce the score to 6:7 from their own perspective by the 15th minute. In the phase that followed, HC Elbflorenz was particularly successful in the circle and TUSEM in its backcourt. With the score at 11:8 and four goals from the circle by the HC, guest coach Michael Hegemann took his first time out. The team from the Ruhr region promptly managed to make it 11:10 with two goals. At this point there were still 10 minutes left to play.

After the Saxons then failed with a double chance against Essen keeper Diedrich, the guests were able to equalize to 11:11 on a counterattack through Tim Mast. The Essen team’s 3-0 run caused André Haber to call the first time-out on the Dresden side. However, the Dresden team was initially able to reduce their higher error density. But the Essenes also did not take advantage of the Saxons’ mistakes consistently or made mistakes of their own. It was HC backcourt player Justin Döbler who broke the goalless spell for both teams with 12:11. In total, the Saxons only scored four goals in the last 12 minutes of the first half. Since there was little going on in terms of positional play, it was Dresden’s tempo game that stood out. Marino Mallwitz also provided important support during this phase. A half with ups and downs on both sides ended with 15:13 for the home team.

Dresden started the second half well. Goals from Ivar Stavast and Julius Dierberg made it 17:13 within a short time. With Ivar Stavast making it 20:16 in the 38th minute, the HCE continued to maintain its lead. For the guests, it was backcourt player Dennis Szczesny who kept pulling on the chains during this period. In the 45th minute it was 22:20 and you had the feeling that Dresden were always keeping their opponents alive, even though they could have led with five goals. This became even clearer at 22:21 by Dennis Szczesny. HCE coach André Haber probably also had the feeling and took another time out a good 14 minutes before the end. It was thanks to a save by Max Mohs that the aforementioned Szczesny didn’t score to make it 22:22. It was also Mohs who saved again against the guests a little later, twice. The Saxons then managed to make it 23:21 through left winger Jannik Dutschke. What was noticeable at the HCE in this tight phase was that young players like Jannik Dutschke, Justin Döbler and Maurice Niestroj received the trust of André Haber. With the score at 24:23, there were still 5:30 minutes left to play for the HCE when Essen received a penalty throw. However, Max Mohs saved this and the HC regained possession of the ball. However, the Dresden team did not take advantage of their chance to throw and Essen subsequently equalized to 24:24. The scorer was district player Christian Wilhelm, who played a very strong game.

At 25:24, the guests from the Ruhr had another penalty throw, but Felix Klingler threw it over the box. After the game, Essen coach Michael Hegemann spoke of the “decisive punch” that was missing to win the game. But the Saxons also gave the ball away again. Just like the Essenes just 30 seconds later. Once again in possession of the ball, the HC took a time-out a minute before the end. A good 25 seconds before the final siren, it was Ivar Stavast who “welded” the ball under the edge of the crossbar with a throw and thus the victory. Since Max Mohs held again after a timeout for Essen, Dresden won 26:24.

Conclusion: In the end it was a game of nerves for both teams, although the Saxons showed a little more nerve in the end. A game increasingly dominated by the defensive lines and goalkeepers had the decisive protagonists on the Dresden side in goalkeeper Max Mohs and backcourt player Ivar Stavast in the final phase. Mohs “nailed” the goal and Stavast “nailed” the decisive goal under the crossbar. HC Elbflorenz Dresden is in a good position after four games with 6:2 points and was able to achieve its second home win in the second home game.

André Haber said after the game: “I’m very happy that we won today. I am very happy with our fighting spirit. Over 60 minutes, this was probably our toughest win so far. We really had to work hard. We knew that food comes to us with a broad heart. After all, they have won their last three competitive games. Even if we were ahead by three or four goals at times, Essen simply couldn’t be shaken off. We always believed we could win today, even in the tight phase. It may not have been the most attractive game for the spectators today, but it was exciting.”
