As of today, healthcare workers who contracted Covid in the first corona wave and developed long-term complaints (long Covid) can register with the Ministry of Health for compensation.

Long-term ill healthcare workers receive a one-off amount of 15,000 euros as compensation for loss of income due to disability. They must meet all kinds of conditions and be able to submit the necessary documents and declarations.

According to Minister of Health Helder, this concerns a group of approximately 1,000 people, for whom 33 million euros is available. The counter closes on October 23.

The government’s compensation scheme was introduced after much insistence by the trade unions. The FNV is happy that there is finally an arrangement, but calls the arrangement meager, for too few people and with many snags.

Twelve documents

The scheme is only for healthcare workers in healthcare institutions who provided intensive care to Covid patients in the first corona wave (March to June 2020), when they themselves became ill and developed long Covid.

The scheme is not for supporting administrative and technical staff in healthcare or for healthcare employees who later contracted Covid and are still experiencing the consequences.

Twelve documents must be submitted with an application. These include an employer’s statement, an infection statement signed by the head of department at the time, and the medical examination report from the general practitioner. This can become problematic if the medical diagnosis of long Covid is not made until much later.

A UWV inspection certificate for the Wia disability benefit must also be submitted. This can be difficult because the UWV has long waiting lists for this inspection.

Threshold

The FNV has difficulty with the strict registration procedure. “It is an unattainable administrative threshold. Documents are sometimes not available and there is too little time, which means that people are in danger of being unfairly left out,” says FNV director Kitty Jong.
