Like Princess Anne and Prince Andrew, Harry is one of seven state counselors, who can replace the king if he is abroad or falls ill. According to British law, state counselors must have a home in Great Britain, but after Harry was evicted from Frogmore Cottage earlier this year, this is no longer the case.
To solve that problem, royal courtiers are said to have discussed the option of renting a home on a royal estate to Harry and Meghan, royal sources claimed in ‘The Sunday Times’. One of those options would be an apartment in Kensington Palace, where Prince William and Kate also have a place. A friend of Charles also said: “The king recognizes that removing Harry as counselor would be seen as an act of antagonism and he does not want to do that. If, as a result, there should be a pied-à-terre for his son somewhere on the royal estate, that seems reasonable.”
But “these claims are not true,” Buckingham Palace refutes. It is believed that the King does not want to remove Prince Harry and Prince Andrew from the Council of State to avoid additional tensions within the royal family and because he considers it unlikely that either of them will ever have to effectively take over his role.
This statement from Buckingham Palace comes after it emerged yesterday that Prince Harry had had to submit a formal request to visit his father or stay on the royal estate. Last month he flew from the US to London for the WellChild Awards and wanted to visit and stay with his father. However, he was told he had to submit a formal request for this. After he finally did that, the palace explained that the king would be at Balmoral in Scotland and that he was welcome there. But Harry and Charles thought that was impossible given the time pressure. Even when Harry subsequently requested to stay at Windsor Castle, he was told that he had to book in advance.
