The two captains of this 18th edition of the Solheim Cup, rich in emotion, met on Sunday evening for a highly anticipated debrief at the end of a breathtaking day of singles.

Stacy Lewis (Captain of the USA)

What did you say to your players when they set off?

I asked them to keep it simple without putting pressure on themselves for the result, but emphasizing our pride in seeing them all come together as a real team and as throughout this week. They were very excited again last night, but we had a great time together.

You brought out your players in an order more or less similar to that of the European team…

Yes, I was curious to put Lexi Thompson in last position, a role she has never had to play in the past. She has rather played up front during previous editions. But I wanted someone strong who could handle the pressure at the end of the day. She has been superb all week. I also wanted to feel energy.

When mixing talents, I had a problem of choice, they all played so well. So, I focused on starts 9, 10 and 11 and rightly so, the meeting was decided by a few millimeters.

Suzann Pettersen (Captain of Europe)

Quite happy to keep the cup after having fought hard to get back on par with the United States. It’s great for all of us, but especially for the young people who experienced this. These girls are really amazing!

We gave the Americans too much freedom on Friday morning, but we remained united to get back to their level on the eve of the singles.

Regarding the order of play, Stacy Lewis and I imagined a more or less identical organization. Solid players at the start and end. Nothing very original. I rather oriented my choice according to the form displayed by each player.

Yes, they are all very strong but having Thompson and Pedersen in the 12th tee, long hitters on a par 5 where anything can happen and has happened, that was a lot more to me.

But it was ultimately in Hedwall’s then Ciganda’s game that the decision was made. Now if you ask me if I’m going back for another tour in 2024, I’ll tell you “yes, I’m already a candidate!”
