India, aiming for the men’s gold in the Asian Games hockey, won the first match of Pool A with a resounding victory. India beat Uzbekistan by 16 unanswered goals.
For India, Varun Kumar scored four goals, Lalit Kumar Upadhyay and Mandeep Singh scored three goals each.
Sukhjeet (2), Abhishek, Amit Rohidas, Shamser Singh and Sanjay each scored a goal. India led 2-0 in the first quarter and Uzbek netted five more times in the second quarter.
With this, they were ahead 7-0 at the break. India hit five more in the third quarter and four more in the last quarter.
In the second match tomorrow, Singapore will be India’s opponents. In the other match in the pool, Japan also won well. Bangladesh was defeated by seven goals against two. In Pool B, Malaysia defeated Thailand 9-0, South Korea defeated Indonesia 10-0 and China defeated Oman 3-2 after a hard-fought battle.
