Häcken Lagging Behind in Battle for Gold: Fourth Straight Away Defeat

Updated 20:17 | Posted 19:27

The reigning champions are lagging behind in the battle for gold.

The fourth straight away defeat, 0–1 against Kalmar FF, means that Häcken is five points behind Malmö FF.

– With every loss, it feels like the train is moving, says Samuel Gustafson.

Guldjagande Häcken had 0-4 against Bayern Leverkusen both in bud and body in the opening away against Kalmar FF. The home team was quick and a quick attacking sequence in the tenth minute paid off immediately.

A quick and beautiful play from the own back line ended with a pass from Simon Skrabb to Deniz Hümmet who thumped and placed 1-0 into the wrong corner for Häcken goalkeeper Peter Abrahamsson.

Near receipt

The reigning champions, who took possession of the ball, were extremely close to equalizing when the striker of the day, Edward Chilufya, twisted a weak Kalmar FF throw-in and rolled the ball tight, tight wide.

Häcken had a better edge on the finishes in the beginning of the second half with finishes from Momodou Sonko and Chilufya who provided class saves from Kalmar goalkeeper Riccardo Friedrich.

Hedges coach Per-Mathias Högmo was not satisfied with the offense and made a triple change after 57 minutes where he picked off Allsvenske scoring king Mikkel Rygaard, in-form Amor Layouni and Sonko. In came Pontus Dahbo, Ali Youssef and Srdjan Hrstic.

Chilufya had another good shot against the Kalmar goal, but again Friedrich responded with a sharp save.

Fourth straight away loss

The changes of the fences did not have the intended effect and the guests did not get a hole in the great Brazilian goalkeeper. Kalmar FF was able to take home a moral 1–0 victory after a strong defensive effort against Häcken’s final forcing.

For the reigning champions, the loss means that they, as third in the table, are five points behind leading Malmö FF. The loss was Häcken’s fourth in a row in the Allsvenskan away from home after previous defeats against IFK Värnamo, IFK Gothenburg and Degerfors.

Elfsborg, who are second, are four points behind MFF, and face Halmstad away on Monday evening.

Kalmar climbs via the 1–0 victory against Häcken to sixth place, just three points behind fourth place Djurgården.

The warning to MFF

However, Malmö FF still have to face Kalmar FF away, who defeated both Elfsborg and Häcken.

– I said we would destroy the gold-chasing teams. It was a statement from us that we are a top team, says centre-back Lars Saetra to Discovery. We also face Malmö FF, they have to watch out.

Per-Mathias Högmo:

– The relationships in our collective attacking game are not right. We don’t create enough scoring chances in relation to the game advantage.

Samuel Gustafson till Discovery:

– With every loss, it feels like the train is leaving, it becomes empty and dark. We are not as good as we hope. We are a bit light in decisive situations and don’t feel so dangerous then. If we want to join and fight for the gold, we have to win these matches, says the Häcken captain.
