The office of the Minister of the Interior and Municipalities, Bassam Mawlawi, clarified what was being raised about preventing the holding of a festival commemorating the “Wimpy” operation on Hamra Street, and indicated that “Mawlawi asked the Governor of the city of Beirut, Judge Marwan Abboud, not to approve after it became clear that the two divided wings of the Syrian Social Nationalist Party had come forward.” With two requests to hold two festivals on the anniversary of Operation Wimpy on the same date and in two adjacent places.
He added: “Since the state of division within the aforementioned party is still prevalent, and given the security problems that holding the two festivals could cause that could lead to riots or shootings between supporters of the two wings, Mawlawi’s request was not to give approval for holding the two aforementioned festivals.”
Earlier, the #Syrian Social Nationalist Party – Rabie Banat wing commemorated the “Wimpy” operation carried out by Khaled Alwan, in the presence of the party’s president and a number of political figures, led by MP Hassan Murad.
The “National” celebrations witnessed military parades larger than the one that took place today, amid tight security measures.
