Review: HP Pavilion Aero 13-be2000 – A Compact and Powerful Mobile Notebook PC

The “HP Pavilion Aero 13-be2000” (hereinafter referred to as “HP Pavilion Aero 13-be”), released in 2023, is a mobile notebook PC equipped with a 13.3-inch display. Although it is an ultra-lightweight type weighing less than 1 kg, the CPU has extremely high performance. Moreover, it is available at a more reasonable price than other products in its class.

13.3-inch mobile notebook PC “HP Pavilion Aero 13-be2000”

There is an impression that the CPU performance is suppressed due to heat generation measures, but the performance is still excellent. Personally, the heat generation and noise were within tolerable limits. The keyboard layout is a bit quirky, but overall it’s a mobile laptop with a very high cost performance. Recommended for people looking for a notebook PC for around 100,000 yen.

In this article, we will use an actual machine borrowed from the manufacturer to review its design, performance, and actual usability.

Body design

There are two main body colors: ceramic white and pink beige.

The model I tried this time was ceramic white.A clean and refreshing white color

The body is made of magnesium alloy, which is lightweight yet strong. It does not have the rough, dry feel that is typical of magnesium, but the coating is somewhat thick, so it has a matte feel.

Installation area is 298mm wide x 209mm deep

Size comparison between A4 notebook (pink) and B5 notebook (blue). You can think of it as approximately A4 size (width 297 x depth 210 mm). Compact for a 13-inch type

The nominal thickness is 16.9 to 18.9 mm.The actual height of the main body excluding the rubber feet on the bottom was 16.9 mm.

The actual height when installed including the rubber feet on the bottom is 17.6mm.

It feels very slim when you hold it in your hand.

The nominal weight is approximately 957g, but the actual weight was 991g.

Although it was a little heavier than the nominal value, it actually feels very light when you hold it in your hand.

display open

The white model also has a white keyboard surface. The color of the keys and the keyboard bezel are slightly different, and the outlines of the keys are clearly visible in the shadows, so it feels relatively easy to identify individual keys.

The display bezel (frame) is narrow and the area around the screen is clean.

The camera supports video recording at 720p 30fps.Although it is a general spec, the image quality is one rank lower than the 1080p type that has been increasing recently.

Interface configuration. Type-C supports charging and video output via USB PD. Although the CPU supports USB4, this model does not.

Type-A comes with a cover, but when using USB, there was no need to operate the cover and it could be inserted normally.

The power adapter is a 65W round type. The actual weight is 317g.Although it is smaller than previous types, it is still huge compared to third-party USB chargers.

The speaker is placed on the bottom.Although the bass sounds a little muffled, audio from videos and video conferences can be heard clearly.

Fingerprint sensor at the bottom right of the keyboard

The exhaust port is in this position

Air intake port on the bottom

About the display

Screen size is 13.3 inches, resolution is 1920 x 1200 dots

Color gamut is 100% sRGB.Although not as vivid as a smartphone or tablet, the colors are bright for a laptop.

The brightness was sufficient and I didn’t feel dark while working.

About the keyboard

The keyboard is Japanese layout without numeric keypad and supports backlight.

left side of keyboard

right side of the keyboard. Special keys are arranged vertically to the right of the Enter key. Those of us who are not used to it may make typos.

The power button is in a delicate position above the Enter key, but it doesn’t respond unless you press and hold it for a long time, so it won’t go to sleep while you’re working if you press it incorrectly.

The keystrokes are shallow, but you can feel the click as the moment you press the key is a little hard. The pressing pressure is high, and it is a keyboard that you can press relatively hard for a thin notebook PC.

The click feeling is hard, and the typing sound is a little loud.It won’t be noisy if you type with light force, but if you are in a quiet place, you should be considerate of your surroundings.

*Benchmark tests were conducted with the Windows 11 power plan set to “Balanced” and the power mode set to “Optimal Performance” or “Balanced” and with the power adapter connected.

*Benchmark results may vary greatly depending on various factors such as parts configuration, environment, timing, and individual differences.

CPU performance

The CPU used is the Zen3+ generation Ryzen 5 7535U or Ryzen 7 7735U. It is an image of a refreshed version of the previous generation Ryzen 5 6600U / Ryzen 7 6800U.

CPU benchmarks show very good scores in multi-threaded (multi-core) tests. However, when we performed the same test by changing the power mode of Windows 11, the score was sluggish at “optimal performance”, which should be able to set high performance. If it’s no different than the standard “balanced” setting, you may not need to adjust the performance.

If the score decreases in the multi-threaded test, which has a high overall load, it may be due to the heat generated by the CPU. The performance may be decreasing due to heat, or the performance may be intentionally adjusted so as not to increase.

That said, it is currently the best-in-class performance for a CPU for thin notebook PCs. You’ll be able to handle heavy tasks comfortably.

graphics performance

For the graphics function, Radeon 660M (Ryzen 5 model) or Radeon 680M (Ryzen 7 model) with built-in CPU is used. Although the 3D benchmark test results are excellent for integrated graphics, they are slightly below average for the same graphics capabilities. It seems that some effects can be expected for very light games and creator work in small classes.

Comfort when working with a PC

PCMark10 is a benchmark test that measures the comfort of working with a PC. Since it is intended for common tasks, the tests are relatively light. The trends in each test are: CPU single-core performance and storage performance for “Essentials” (general use), CPU multi-core performance and memory performance for “Productivity” (business use), and CPU performance for “Digital Contents Creation” (content creation). It seems that storage and GPU performance are strongly affected.

The target values for each test were significantly exceeded, and it should be comfortable to use for general use. However, in multi-core processing, which places a high load on the CPU, performance seems to be sluggish.

battery run time

Battery life is said to be up to 12 hours. However, this is a result of minimizing battery consumption, and is not a result of actual use.

Therefore, I used PCMark10’s battery benchmark function to measure the operating time during business work (web browsing, document creation, video chat, etc.), and found that the battery level reached 3% after 7 hours and 51 minutes from the start, and the system went into hibernation mode. Did. It’s not very long for a recent model, but it’s still within the acceptable range.

However, since the test device was a prototype device with a display resolution of 2560 x 1600 dots (not yet released in Japan), the battery life may be shorter than usual (the higher the resolution, the greater the battery consumption). . You may also be able to extend the run time by lowering the display brightness and performance settings.

About heat and noise

With the Ryzen 7 model I tried this time, I felt that the top of the keyboard became slightly warm under high load. It’s not uncomfortable, and personally I don’t really care.

The top of the keyboard gets slightly warm under high load, but it doesn’t feel hot. *There are individual differences.

When we measured the CPU temperature under high load, the average temperature was in the low 70s. Even if you change the power mode of Windows 11, there is no big change. In fact, “balanced”, which is supposed to have low power, produces a high clock, and may be able to provide better performance than “optimal performance”.

When I checked the sensor logs, no thermal throttling (performance degradation due to heat) was occurring. Perhaps the system is tuned to prevent it from getting too hot.

Changes in CPU clock and temperature during a 10 minute multi-core test of CINEBENCH R23

Although the drive noise (exhaust noise and fan rotation noise) under high load was clearly audible, it was not noisy. However, it is not silent, so I think it is better to be aware that you can hear some noise.

Drive sound measurement results

Power off 36.5dBA – Almost silent around 36.5dBA during standby, almost silent at high load (balanced) around 40.5dBA Exhaust sound can be clearly heard. It’s not noisy, but in a quiet place the sound can be noticeable at high loads (optimal performance) around 40.5dBA Same as above

Very high cost performance for an ultra-light mobile notebook PC

It has top-class performance as a thin notebook PC, and is also ultra-lightweight at less than 1kg. If you look at it purely in terms of specs, it can be said to be the strongest mobile notebook PC in its class.

What’s even more amazing is that it’s not that expensive. Ultra-lightweight types weighing less than 1kg are extremely expensive, and it is not uncommon for the combination of Core i5 + 8GB memory to exceed 100,000 to 150,000 yen. However, when it comes to HP Pavilion Aero 13-be, the Ryzen 5 + 16GB memory model can be sold for around 90,000 yen, and the Ryzen 7 + 16GB memory model can be sold for around 110,000 yen. If you include Rakuten point redemption, you may be able to get an even better deal.

You can sometimes get amazing deals during sales.

However, you may be dissatisfied with the keyboard layout and the fact that the body feels a little flimsy. Although it is built to be sturdy, it does feel a little unreliable compared to other high-end notebook PCs.

However, in terms of cost performance, it is very good. There is basically no problem with durability, but you may want to add a paid warranty with the extra budget. If you are considering a high-performance, ultra-lightweight notebook PC, please check it out.
