She was sixteen when Eunice van Ekert from Nuenen won the world-famous modeling competition Elite Model Look. She defeated 850 other candidates and suddenly her life was completely turned upside down. Now, almost two years later, her suitcase is ready for international assignments in Europe and New York as a curvy model. “These feminine shapes suit me, I am really myself now.”
The competition is organized annually by the world-famous modeling agency Elite Models. Well-known names such as Cindy Crawford, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bünchen and Naomi Campell were previously discovered by Elite. “It was an experience I will never forget,” Eunice reflects. “I learned a lot from it, but I was still very young and there was a lot to deal with.”

Because the world of catwalks and photo shoots is hard work that demands the utmost from a model. Size 34 is still very normal. Always watching your diet, losing weight and exercising hard, only to be rejected because you don’t have the right figure, it was difficult for Eunice to meet the extremely high beauty standards.
“I have a predisposition to become a bit broader,” she says. “When I started I was a high fashion model, where you are expected to be very slim. But that just doesn’t suit me. I had a hard time with that.”
“I just have hips and breasts, and that’s completely normal.”
Time for some reflection. “I wanted to figure out for myself what exactly I wanted. What really makes me happy? After conversations with the people around me and my sports coach, I decided to change course and register as curvy model. I just have hips and breasts and let’s be honest, that’s completely normal. And I think it’s very important that other girls and boys see that too. You are beautiful just the way you are.”
Eunice is now registered with modeling agencies in the Netherlands, Germany and New York. “I have built up a nice portfolio here and I am going to use it to clients abroad. Hopefully I will receive a call soon for my first international assignment,” she says, laughing.
Now that she has her curves, everything falls into place. With her size 38/40 she fits seamlessly with the body of the average Western woman. Not ultra-skinny, just ‘normal’.
Exercising and paying attention to her diet to stay in shape are still part of it. “Don’t think you’re like curvy model you can eat anything, because it is important that your skin looks good and that you feel good. For me it feels much more natural and feminine, I am now really myself.”
