The Arms Trade and the War in Ukraine: Pope Francis’ Message and Reactions

Pope Francis expressed the opinion that arms dealers are interested in the war in Ukraine: “the interests in this war are not only related to the Ukrainian-Russian problem, but to the sale of weapons, the arms trade.”

Direct speech Franziska: “It seems to me that the interests in this war are not only connected with the Ukrainian-Russian problem, but with the sale of weapons, the arms trade.

We must not play games with the martyrdom of this people. We have to help them solve things… I now see that some countries are moving backward, they don’t want to give (Ukraine) weapons. A process is beginning in which the Ukrainian people will certainly be a martyr, and this is unpleasant.”

Details: Pope Francis on Saturday suggested that some countries were “toying” with Ukraine by first providing weapons and then reneging on their commitments.

Francis made his comments in response to a journalist’s question about whether he was upset that his efforts to bring peace had failed. He said he felt “somewhat disappointed” and then started talking randomly about the arms industry and war.

Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni provided an explanation of Francis’ words. Bruni stressed that the Pope does not take a position on whether countries should continue to send weapons to Ukraine or stop sending them: “This was a reflection on the consequences of the arms industry: The Pope said that those who trade in weapons never pay for the consequences of their choices , and leave them to pay people, for example, Ukrainians, who die a martyr’s death.”

What preceded:

On August 25, Francis addressed the participants of the X All-Russian Day of Catholic Youth in St. Petersburg. In his speech the pontiff said the following: “Never forget about the heritage. You are the descendants of great Russia: the great Russia of saints, rulers, the great Russia of Peter I, Catherine II, that empire – great, enlightened, great culture and great humanity. Never give up this heritage. You are descendants of the great Mother Russia, step forward with this. And thank you – thank you for your way of being, for your way of being Russian.” According to the Pope responded to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, saying that Francis is spreading Russian great power ideas that the Kremlin uses to justify the killing of Ukrainians. In September, Ukrainian Greek Catholic bishops met with Pope Francis and told him that praising Russia’s imperial past had “hurt the Ukrainian people.”
