Tragic end for two people on the asphalt on Friday night – The circumstances of the horrible accident are shocking – The police force mourns its member – What the Police Spokesperson said
Affliction and shockin society in general and in the police force in particular, from the tragic account of the accident that happened last night, just before 8, on the Ayia Napa-Rizoelia highway.
O 51-year-old Police Officer Petros Eleftheriouof the Voroklini Police Station, was one of the two victims of the horrific accident. The second person who tragically lost his life was a foreigner, whose details the Police are trying to fully identify. He is a 48-year-old man.
Both were carried away by a car driven by a 45-year-old man.
Tragic circumstances…
The member of the force who was killed was on duty and responded to a call to the scene at the time. According to the information made known by the Police, was attempting to restrain a person who was on foot on the highway and remove it from the spot.
As he said in his statements about the accident, the Police Spokesperson Christos Andreoua car that was moving at the time at the scene, ran over and fatally injured both of them.
“An information was received that a pedestrian was on the highway from Ayia Napa to Rizoelia. So three of our members responded, two motorcyclists from the Ulam Police Headquarters as well as a patrol from the Oroklini police station. When they had gone to the scene they found a person lying on the highway. The road was blocked so they could contain him. It appears that this person, who was reportedly behaving strangely, jumped from the guardrail in the center of the highway and went to the opposite side. From then on, our member responded immediately, i.e. he went to the opposite side of traffic from Rizoelia to Ayia Napa and the motorcyclists followed close behind. Apparently, somewhere along the road our member parked the patrol car in a safety lane with headlights on and in his attempt to restrain the second person to get him safely off the freeway, a passing SUV rammed and fatally injured both member of the Police, as well as the second person” as Mr. Andreou said.
The unlucky one policemanlost his life instantaneouslywhile the secondly facewas transferred to the Larnaca Hospital, where he succumbed a short time later in his wounds. “This is a 48-year-old man who is expected to be fully identified possibly in the next few days,” said Mr. Andreou.
What the driver of the vehicle stated in his statement
The examination police investigations into the exact circumstances of the double crash are in full swing.
The driver of the car was subjected to a breathalyzer and drug test with a negative result. In deposit he reported to him that he was driving at a constant speed and suddenly he noticed two persons falling on the road.
The autopsies on the bodies of the two victims will be carried out tomorrow.
