The performances of the Italians from Måneskin in the USA have been more than successful, and this inspires hope for the revival of this musical genre, reports AP, quoted by BTA.
Måneskin had just played a midday promo show in Times Square when they learned that their concert at Madison Square Garden, scheduled for later in the week, was completely sold out. Pleasantly surprised, frontman Damiano David called the news “very special”. “This is one of the most important places you can dream to play”, he told the AP. Thursday night’s show at the famed venue will kick off the North American leg of their Rush! World Tour, which kicked off earlier this year.
In an era where rock bands seem endangered and most of the genre’s best artists are from the last millennium, Måneskin has come as something of a pleasant surprise. Coming to the fore in 2021 after an unexpected win at the Eurovision Song Contest with their hit “Zitti E Buoni”, the Italian quartet seem to be reviving rock music, or at least offering a glimmer of hope.
Bassist Victoria DeAngelis says it happened completely by accident. According to her, the group was born from “pure passion” between four friends who met in high school. “I think for us the idea of making rock music came about because we were very young”, she shares. The four of them just wanted to make music, but never had the idea of breaking into show business as a rock band.
“We grew up listening to our parents’ music. And then we started playing our teachers’ instruments and just discovered rock music and all the bands from the past. It’s something that really shaped us into who we are today.”De Angelis also says.
This osmosis pulses through the band as they listen to classic rock filtered through their parents and grandparents. Guitarist Thomas Raggi realized he wanted to play rock music after hearing what Jimi Hendrix could do with his Fender Stratocaster. “I want to revive the figure of the iconic guitarist a little”says Ragi.
Drummer Ethan Torchio shares this sentiment, saying that his style is different, yet influenced by 1970s and 1980s rock. “I just try to be modern and vintage at the same time”he said.
Now, with three studio albums behind them, the young rockers are becoming a global phenomenon. As the band’s popularity continues to grow, DeAngelis says he’s not swayed by the fame, but rather sees it as “a great adventure we can share with each other”. “I think we’re lucky because we met when we were very young, so our personalities basically developed together and we went through this crazy experience together, which made the bond between us even stronger.”says Victoria.
While they could easily be mistaken for glam rockers from another era due to their fashionable style and anthems like “I Wanna Be Your Slave” or “Supermodel”, their music has a strong sensuality that recalls that forbidden allure of the early days of rock and roll , creating intimacy “maxed out” during live concerts. Gradually, the musicians of the group accumulated a huge mass of loyal fans around the world, led by their charismatic frontman.
David attributes this atmosphere to the days when they played in the streets of Rome as teenagers. “We had to get people’s attention. So we saw that interacting and connecting with the audience was something that really worked.”, says David. This carries over into their live show, as for several songs they move away from the main stage to get closer to the audience. They also bring fans on stage.
“We’re trying to figure out ways to get closer to people because that’s how you can actually feel the energy. And you can touch and see their faces and make them sing… it’s just sharing a fun moment for us.”says David.
The connection between artist and audience was strengthened during their concerts in South America, where the group was exposed to some of the most energetic audiences.
“People are going crazy, singing the lyrics all the time. They’re really screaming at the top of their lungs. They’re pogo crazy. They’re stage diving into the crowd. It’s high energy.”says De Angelis.
As the number of their fans continues to grow along with the size of the venues, David admits that success comes with some challenges: “It leads to more fans, of course, and things like that, but it also leads to more haters, more criticism and more expectations.”. But he is confident the group remains resilient.

“Very often the audience wants artists to always be the same. But I think that’s very, very unhealthy. That’s why it’s important to have the courage to constantly experiment and change, no matter what people think.”Damiano is convinced.
