Significant Increase in Number of Deaths in South Korea in 2022, Highest in History

Xinhua News Agency reports from Seoul. South Korea on Sept. 23 that data from the National Statistical Office of South Korea indicates that the number of deaths in 2022 totaled 372,939, an increase of 17.4 percent from 2021, which is considered the highest number. Since South Korea began collecting relevant data in 1970, the number of deaths per 100,000 people has been 727.6, an increase of 17.6 percent.

In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak Resulting in 31,280 deaths in 2022, an increase from 5,030 deaths in 2021.

Meanwhile, the number of deaths among people aged 80 and over rose 26.3 percent to 200,493 last year. which accounted for more than half of all deaths. The number of deaths among people aged 60 and over and 70 and over increased by double digits to 48,998 and 76,621, respectively.
