A Different Choice: Holger Badstuber’s Preferred National Coach Over Julian Nagelsmann

If Holger Badstuber had his way, someone other than Julian Nagelsmann would have become national coach. Who the ex-FC Bayern professional would have preferred to see.

Julian Nagelsmann has been the new coach of the German men’s national soccer team since Friday. As a former coach of Hoffenheim, Leipzig and FC Bayern, he has always been a polarizing person. The same applies to his new position.

Ex-Bayern professional and national player Holger Badstuber is also critical of the 36-year-old’s commitment. In his column at web.de, the defender, who ended his career at the end of 2021, said the following:

Badstuber also explains why he would have preferred to see someone else: “I don’t deny Nagelsmann’s competence. Anyone who made it to FC Bayern and to the sidelines of the German national team at such a young age deserves nothing but respect. He is an extraordinary character, a tactician, strong rhetorically, simply a very good coach. But is he what the DFB currently needs? Rather not. Nagelsmann is not a coach for a project like the home European Championships. He is a club coach who wants and has to work with a team every day. That’s where his future lies.”

His choice would probably have been Louis van Gaal: “With the Netherlands he has proven often enough that he can push a team to peak form. He is smart enough to be able to surprise and take the media and people along with him. He also knows Germany very well from his time at FC Bayern. I actually always had the feeling that he and Germany weren’t finished with each other yet. He has enough authority and charisma anyway,” says Badstuber.
