Ojārs Karčevskis, chairman of the board of the Latvian Association of Fuel Dealers, in response to this viewer’s request, said that the explanation is very simple.

“Between our four countries, including Poland, it is usually like this: Estonia has the most expensive, Latvia – in the middle, and Lithuania – the cheapest. The difference is this – three main reasons: firstly, in Lithuania the excise tax is lower than 5 cents; secondly, the state reserve fee for them is less than 1 cent, for us it is 7 cents, which makes a total of 12… And thirdly, they have Lithuanian procurement bans from “Orlen” factories. They are located next to the “Orlen” factory on the territory of Lithuania. These are the three main reasons why it is cheaper in Lithuania,” explained Karčevskis, chairman of the board of the Latvian Fuel Dealers Association, in the TV24 program, answering the audience why fuel is cheaper in Lithuania than in Latvia.
