Rupert Murdoch’s Plan for a Dynasty: The Rise of the Murdoch Family Business

Behind the scenes, Rupert Murdoch prepared his sons Lachlan and James for a top job within the family business. In the BBC documentary “The rise of the Murdoch dynasty” (2020), it sounds that “family has always been important to Rupert, especially from the point of view of building a dynasty.” A statement by Andrew Neil, former employee of The Sunday Times. “The conversations were about how he was building a company for them. And he sometimes liked to pit them against each other, to see how they would react.”

Family is important, he wanted one of his children to take over when he grows up. But especially one of his sons, because Elisabeth had no place in Murdoch’s plans. “He didn’t think women could really do that sort of thing at the time, although I think he may have changed his mind over the years,” Neil said in a podcast van Spectator Americano earlier this year.

Elisabeth, for her part, previously stated that she had “absolutely no ambition” to succeed her father. She was managing director of Sky Networks, part-owned by News Corp, but founded her own production company, Shine, in 2000. It was purchased in 2011 by… News Corp..
